MS Walk

Sunday, May 4, 2014

The Northern California Chapter of the National Multiple Sclerosis Society will hold its annual Walk MS event in Downtown Historic Folsom on Sunday May 4, 2014. Walk MS is a rallying point of the MS movement, a community coming together to raise funds that will support direct services for the nearly 12,000 people with MS and their families in Northern California. Funds raised also support MS research worldwide to stop MS in its tracks, restore function that’s been lost and end MS forever.

People can participate in Walk MS individually or as a team. Participants can choose a 5K or 1 mile walk, roll or stroll. Volunteers are also needed! There is guaranteed fun for the whole family! Registration begins at 8am, walk begins at 9am. Light refreshments are served and entertainment is provided.

For more information, or to register, visit the website: www.walkmsnorcal.org or call 415-230-6678

Amgen - Tour of California

Monday, May 12, 2014
Stage 2: Monday, May 12 – Folsom (Individual Time Trial) Start Location: Sutter Street Finish Location: Liedesdorff Street & Wool Street Start Time: 1:05 p.m. Stage Length: 12.5 miles

A professional cycling event designed for speed, the 12.5-mile route will begin and finish in Folsom's Historic District. A start on Sutter Street will be followed by a turn onto Riley and a short downhill run onto the Rainbow Bridge and over the American River. The route will then turn north on Folsom Auburn Road toward Folsom Lake. A right turn onto Folsom Lake Crossing will take the riders past California's second oldest prison. A turn onto Green Valley will lead the riders to a 180-degree turn back over the same route to finish downtown.

“An opportunity to showcase our beautiful city to a world-wide audience is rare and invaluable to our long-term economic vitality,” says City Manager Evert Palmer. “NBC Sports will cover the event live and more than 100 journalists will be in town to report on the race.”

Palmer notes that this large-scale event will have traffic impacts and that some people will be inconvenienced. Roads on the race course will be open for the morning and evening commute, but will be closed much of the day.

“Professional traffic engineers are developing a detailed traffic control plan,” says Palmer. “We are also working closely with Police and Fire on emergency response coordination, with our Solid Waste Division to avoid service disruptions, with schools, the prison and other key stakeholders.”
